About West Bengal University of Technology
The West Bengal University of Technology is a public university, UGC-affiliated. WBUT’s main campus is in Salt Lake City, Kolkata. It was established on August 5, 2000 though the doors were first officially opened in 2001. Formed under the West Bengal Act XV of 2000, WBUT currently has 120,000 students and 1000 administrative staff members.
WBUTech was created to address the acute need felt by the government of West Bengal to set up an appropriate technological and engineering facility given the changing times. Existing and upcoming institutions were not being able to fully deal with the scope of technical education. To enhance the quality and to provide qualitative technical education under a social perspective, the West Bengal University of Technology was realized.
With the government providing funds for the running of the university, its regulatory and advisory bodies are structured into five councils: General Council, Executive Council, Academic Council, Finance Council and Advisory Council. Each has a specific function, and all combined streamline the functioning of WBUT. The current chancellor is the governor of West Bengal, Sri Gopalkrishna Gandhi; the vice-chancellor is Professor Sabyasachi Sengupta.
With engineering and technology at its forefront, the university provides a multidisciplinary approach to education. It offers undergraduate degrees, postgraduate degrees and doctorates. With a fine combination of study and application, classroom studies and practical lessons, a wide range of courses are offered in various branches of engineering and technology, from biotechnology to architecture. There is also a vital focus on research, facilitated through the School of Advance Interdisciplinary Study and Research.
An academic year is divided into two semesters – the fall and the spring session. Examinations are held at the end of each semester. Admission is garnered through entrance exams, followed by group discussions and interviews.
Over the years, WBUT has added more modern courses, primary among them business administration, so as to offer a more wholesome curriculum from which to choose from. Another element of change introduced in the university has been the presence of short-term courses. With increasing practical approaches to suit the subject requirements, West Bengal University of Technology offers these need-based short-term courses for working people and advanced students with the aim of providing added-value education.
Moreover, the use of Internet is rampant: timetables, course syllabi, course material, exam schedules, exam results are all posted online for the perusal of students at leisure.
West Bengal University of Technology is affiliated with several other engineering colleges in the state. The campus provides students with many facilities, from computer labs to libraries. To give students an edge, it also provides technical workshops, so as to arm its students with practical know-how. Placement sessions occur at the end of a batch’s degree. This gives students a pre-emptive chance to find a place in the industry.
